In this episode of Jazz Bass Quick Bites, we’re taking the final step in our investigation of G7 – we’ll be improvising over all the elements that we’ve discussed. In the video edition, I talk about chord scale relationships and the application of a G mixolydian scale and G7 chord tones during improvisation. From there, I provide three basic strategies for idea creation and development while improvising before playing through the whole arrangement that we’ve built over the last few episodes. You can check out the backing track and some melodic ideas over G7 below. I encourage you to try improvising over the backing track and see what you can create using the ideas in the video!
EXAMPLE 1 – This includes four different melodic ideas that you can use as a starting point for improvisation over a G7 chord.

EXAMPLE 2 – This is the backing track that you can use to improvise – it’s got a metronome on 2 & 4, a walking bass line, and some chords!
You can find the backing track HERE
EXAMPLE 3 – This is the backing track without bass so you can practice your walking lines too!
You can find this version of the backing track HERE
Once you play through the music – send me a message and let me know what you think! Even better, make a video of yourself playing the line and send it to me!
